We get it. A tall tree can feel intimidating, especially when it’s close to your house or dropping limbs in your yard. But here’s the thing: topping might seem like a quick fix, but it’s one of the worst things you can do to a healthy tree.

What is Tree Topping?
Topping (also called heading or hat-racking) is when the upper portion of a tree is cut back drastically, usually by cutting through large branches or even the trunk, to reduce the height.
It’s often done when a tree has outgrown its space, is interfering with power lines, or looks “too tall” for comfort. But there are many better ways to manage those concerns without harming the tree.
The Big Problems with Topping Trees
❌ It Seriously Damages the Tree
Topping removes a huge portion of the tree’s leafy canopy, which is how it makes food through photosynthesis. Stripping that away sends the tree into shock and weakens its ability to survive.
❌ It Causes Ugly, Weak Regrowth
After being topped, trees try to recover by producing lots of fast-growing shoots called suckers. These grow back quickly but are weak, poorly attached, and prone to breakage, especially in storms.
❌ It Increases Risk of Disease and Decay
Topping leaves large, open wounds that don’t heal well, causing tremendous stress to the tree. This invites pests, fungus, and decay to settle in. Once rot sets in, it’s often just a matter of time before the tree becomes hazardous.
❌ It Can Actually Make the Tree More Dangerous
Ironically, topping a tree to “make it safer” usually does the opposite. The weak new growth and decay-prone wounds create a future hazard far worse than what you started with.
❌ It Ruins the Tree’s Natural Shape
Let’s be honest—topped trees just don’t look good. They lose their natural form and become stubby, awkward versions of what they once were. That can lower your property’s curb appeal and value.
So What Should You Do Instead?
If you’re worried about a tall or overgrown tree, the good news is that there are smarter, safer alternatives to topping. We often recommend:
- Crown reduction: Selectively pruning the top of the tree to reduce height without major structural damage
- Thinning: Removing select branches to reduce weight and improve airflow without altering the shape
- Crown raising: Trimming lower limbs to improve clearance for walkways, driveways, or views
- Regular maintenance: Proactive trimming keeps trees healthy, balanced, and less likely to outgrow their space
These techniques preserve the tree’s health, structure, and appearance, without introducing long-term risks.
