Do the Scratch Test
This is a simple trick we often recommend to homeowners.
Gently scratch a small section of a twig or branch:
- Green underneath = the tree is still alive
- Dry, brown, or brittle = that part is dead
Try this in a few different spots. If everything is brown and brittle, the tree may not be coming back.
Look for Brittle or Falling Branches
Dead trees (or dead sections of trees) tend to:
- Drop branches easily
- Snap instead of bend
- Feel dry and lightweight
If you’re seeing a lot of branches coming down after winter, it could be a sign of deeper issues.
Check the Trunk for Damage
Take a walk around the base of the tree and look for:
- Cracks or splits in the trunk
- Peeling or missing bark
- Fungal growth (like mushrooms at the base)
These can all indicate that the tree is struggling internally, even if some branches appear fine.
Consider the Type of Tree
Not all trees follow the same schedule.
In our area (Harrisburg, Hershey, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg), some species leaf out later than others. Weather also plays a role; cooler springs can delay growth across the board.
- If all your trees are slow, it’s probably just the season.
- If one tree stands out, it’s worth a closer look.

- There are no signs of growth by late spring
